Greens' Senator wishes PM a happy Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day in 2016 has an extra layer of political activism as frustration over Australia’s slow walk towards achieving marriage equality grows.

Australian Greens marriage equality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms has revealed that he’s sent a cheeky Valentine’s Day message to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and government and crossbench senators to say love is love and everyone, regardless of sexuality, should be treated equally.

“I’ve sent 42 Valentine’s Day cards to my colleagues in the senate this week ahead of the international day of love this Sunday,” Senator Simms said.

“The message is simple – Cupid doesn’t discriminate and neither should our law.  Love is love.

“Tensions can mount while the issue is debated in the chamber so sending this simple message of equal love was a good way to wish my colleagues well on Valentine’s Day and remind them what this debate is all about.

“With the government hell-bent on pushing forward with its costly and divisive plan to hold a plebiscite on marriage equality, I wanted to send these cards to my senate colleagues to remind them that we have the authority to resolve this matter.”

The Senator’s Valentine’s Day action is not the only marriage equality action occurring today, Australian Marriage Equality has sent Calentine’s Day messages to politicians as well and the Prime Minister has received many messages in responses to his Valentine’s Day post on Facebook.
