Moonlight was the first LGBT+ film and the first film with an all-black cast to win the prestigious Best Picture Award at the Oscars, and now the films directed is being honoured by his home town.

Director Barry Jenkins and the author of the films source novel Tarell Alvin McCraney both hail from Liberty City, which also served as the setting for the film.

‘Moonlight Way’ was established across five blocks in the heart of Liberty City over the weekend.

“We’re two boys from Liberty City up here on this stage representing 305,” McCraney said in his acceptance speech earlier this year.

“This goes out to all those black and brown boys and girl and non-gender-conforming who don’t see themselves… this is for you.”

Moonlight garnered a little extra attention last year when presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty accidentally named La La Land as the winner of Best Picture – before Beatty corrected the error.
