Dan Tehan: Labor must support traditional marriage if NO vote wins

The Minister for Veterans Affairs, Dan Tehan, has called on the Labor party to support traditional marriage values if the NO campaign is successful during the government’s postal survey on marriage.

On Saturday at the WA Labor conference Opposition Leader Bill Shorten renewed Labor’s commitment to introduce marriage equality should his party win the next federal election.

Appearing on Sky News, Tehan said the Labor party should respect the outcome of the government’s postal survey on marriage equality.

Tehan argued that because the Labor party had decided to take part in the campaign to persuade Australians to say YES to changing the marriage laws, they should also agree to abandon support for same-sex marriage sghould the NO campaign have success.

“The Labor party are now fully on board with the process we are going through, they are out there actively campaigning, so they should abide by the decision of the Australian people as well,” Tehan said.

On Saturday, while delivering a speech in Perth, Bill Shorten promised that if he won the next election, he’d make marriage equality a reality within his first 100 days in office.

“It’s time for marriage equality,” Shorten said during the opening of his speech, before noting his opposition to the government’s chosen pathway for addressing the issue. “I do not support making laws by postal survey.”
