World Health Organisation reverses decision to have Mugabe as ambassador

The World Health Organisation has reversed it’s decision to appoint Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as a Goodwill Ambassador.

Health organisations around the globe were shocked when new WHO President Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the appointment. Mugabe has been President of Zimbabwe for almost 30 years, during that time he has called for homosexual to be executed, and been accused of numerous human rights violations.

The head of the World Health Organisation has now rescinded the offer.

“Over the last few days, I have reflected on my appointment of H.E. President Robert Mugabe as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for (Non-communicable diseases) in Africa. As a result I have decided to rescind the appointment” Dr Tedros said in a statement.

“I have listened carefully to all who have expressed their concerns, and heard the different issues that they have raised. I have also consulted with the Government of Zimbabwe and we have concluded that this decision is in the best interests of the World Health Organization.”

Dr Tedros said his goal in his new role was to build a truly global health organisation for the world, and for that goal to succeed it must include everyone.

“For me, what is important is to build political leadership and create unity around bringing health to all, based on WHO’s core values.”
