Government releases findings of LGBTI aged care strategy review

The Turnbull Government have released a review of aged care for LGBTI+ Australians, following the implementation of an inclusive strategy five years ago.

The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Ageing and Aged Care Strategy was designed in consultation with LGBTI+ groups and advisors to ensure “equitable access to high-quality, culturally appropriate aged care for all LGBTI people.”

Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt said the review shows the strategy has had a positive effect, and that it is important to build on its success.

“The Australian Government wants all senior Australians to access the services they need and expect as they get older – and recognising diversity is a key factor in meeting that expectation,” Wyatt said.

The review highlights progress in better training for aged care staff in supporting LGBTI+ people, and greater collaboration between the government and the LGBTI sector.

The strategy has also led to over $8million in grants to promote health and wellbeing for older LGBTI+ Australians, and will see $4million funnelled into the National LGBTI Health Alliance over three years to provide awareness training.

“I thank the LGBTI Aged Care Strategy Working Group and applaud the contribution made by providers, peak bodies and individuals to ensure this review was comprehensive and provides a way forward,” Wyatt said.

“The review has informed the development of the new Aged Care Diversity Framework, which I expect to release next month.”

The full review is available online.
