Chris Crocker

The easy way would be to cry ‘leave Britney alone’ and most people quickly nod their heads in unison, recalling the androgynous blonde-haired boy from YouTube. Yet if you’ve watched anything from his online channel recently, you will know that the 23 year-old has moved on. He shaved off those golden locks for a startling transformation.

Now Crocker is onto new ventures: producers are working towards creating a documentary, Me and the Zoo about the young man’s life up to now, focusing on his 15 minutes of internet fame. The ‘LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!’ video has notched up over 40 million views since September 2007. Crocker also has been busy making pop music, having released his first EP, The First Bite this year which will be in clubs soon if it hasn’t been already. Oh yeah, and he’s planning to star in his own full-length gay porn film.

OUTinPerth spoke to Crocker about his new directions in life.

What happened to the blonde hair? I feel the blonde hair represented a different time in my life – so it went, with that time in my life.

What is the ending to ‘Me at the Zoo’ going to be? The ending of the documentary will show where my life is at right now. The life in private no one knows about. Not the public persona. So, for that answer – you must watch it.

How will ‘Me at the Zoo’ differ to your YouTube posts? In everyway possible; I’ve always filmed myself. For me to have a camera crew and filmmakers making a film about me is a very vulnerable experience for me because I am used to being the creator and captain of the ship. It will be a real inside look at the person behind the reputation.

You’ve announced plans to become a porn star. Why? I’ve always been a natural exhibitionist. I’ve always loved showing off. I think the real question is: What is porn? Is it an act of exposing oneself, and if so – why is that so shameful? In my opinion – I’ve revealed more personal things in my videos than what I look like when I am having sex. I don’t understand when people ask Why? Why the hell not? I’m young, sexy, and I feel liberated.

Do you have any inhibitions about making porn? None, whatsoever.

You’ve also released some new music. Where do you find your inspiration? Depends on what I am going for. I love making people want to dance – I also have to write if I am going through a break-up or a difficult time. Since 2008, I’ve done music off and on and I find it to be a handy tool to get my feelings out. I draw from good and bad times.

How has your first EP been received? Such amazing feedback; [I’m] already working on my second EP, entitled The Last Bite.

What did you think about your visit to Australia earlier this year? [It’s] such a magical place. It reminds me of LA and NYC in one. I can’t wait to go back. The people there are so welcoming and lovely and I appreciate them for not booing me offstage [laughs].
