Swedish DJ Avicii found dead in Oman

Swedish DJ Avicii has been found dead in Muscat, Oman. He was 28 years old.

The producer and artist found global success with his electronic dance music including the mega hits Wake Me Up, Hey Brother and Levels. 

The musicians publicist confirmed his death in a statement.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” the statement read.

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”

No details of his death were given but the musician had previously spoken about his health challenges. In 2016 he announced he was retiring from touring after he was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis due to excessive alcohol use.

Avicii fist came to prominence as a member of the Laidback Luke forums, where he posted many notable remixes. His breakthrough track Levels was a smash hit in 2011. The track featured a vocal sample from soul singer Etta James that was also used in several other hits around the same time.

In 2012 he collaborated with David Guetta on Sunshine, next he went on to remix tracks for high profile artists including Madonna and Lenny Kravitz.

In 2013 he worked with former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to compose the theme tune for the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.

His debut album True featured the hits Wake Me Up featuring vocals from Aloe Blacc, You Make Me and Hey Brother. The album also featured a cover of the Antony and the Johnsons song Hope There’s Someone.

Avicii’s second album Stories was released in 2015, the album sold over a million copies around the world.
