The artistic director of the world famous entertainment venue will visit Perth this week for an open casting of aspiring dancers who believe they’ve got what it takes to master the can-can and entertain audiences.

Janet Pharaoh, artistic director of the Moulin Rouge and Erik Sorensen, resident choreographer, will be on the hunt for super talented dancers to join the cast of the famous cabaret, which has been illuminating Paris since 1889.

Castings will be based on some very special requirements. A strong classical dance training is essential as well as being able to meet the strict criteria specific to the Moulin Rouge. Girls must be at least 5 foot 9, and boys must be a minimum of  six-foot-one.

The duo will be looking for dancers with a well-balanced figure but also will be seeking dancers with the personality, the charisma and the capacity to assimilate choreography with class and distinction. Male dancers need to have a well-proportioned muscled body.

After this casting, the Moulin Rouge will welcome the selected artists into the current show Féerie, expanding its team of dancers. The lucky dancers will travel to Paris for a month rehearsals and will join the team of 80 artists, from 14 different nationalities.

Féerie is a two hour-long show with costumes of feathers, rhinestones and sequins and involves a 60 tonne-water aquarium and the famous French Cancan. The Moulin Rouge attracts huge audiences with more than 600,000 audience members each year.

The Perth auditions will be on Wednesday 11th July at 12pm at The West Australian Ballet, 134 Whatley Crescent in Maylands.
