New campaign tackles HIV stigma

The WA AIDS Council has launched a new photographic campaign to tackle the stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS in the lead up to World AIDS Day.

The 1 Community campaign is an online campaign that organisers hope will target the fear, ignorance and misconceptions of people living with HIV that leads to discrimination.

The campaign was launched at Fair Day in Russel Square this year, inviting people to learn more about the facts around HIV and people living with HIV. Now the campaign is inviting people to visit the website, www.1community.org.au , and take a stand by making a public statement of support.

WAAC Executive Director Trish Langdon said many people living with HIV still continued to report instances of discrimination in their everyday lives.

‘Despite having some legal protection many people living with HIV do not feel safe to disclose their status to those around them. This burden of secrecy often takes a huge toll on a person’s health, wellbeing and freedom to engage in community life,’ Langdon said.

‘This is a virus which does not discriminate. It affects people from all walks of life.’
