Emma Watson shows support for transgender rights during UK debate

British actor Emma Watson has shown her support for the transgender and gender diverse community as the UK debates their Gender Recognition Act.

The British government are taking consultations on the idea of reforming the Act. Advocates are urging the changes to allow trans and gender diverse people to more easily change legal documentation to accurately reflect their gender or non-binary identity, and remove the legal requirement for medical intervention.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson has garnered almost 3 million likes on an Instagram post showing her support for the community, wearing a shirt with the slogan ‘Trans Rights are Human Rights’. Watson also took to Twitter to show her solidarity.

Members of UK’s transgender community and advocates took to social media to thank Watson for bringing attention to the issue, including British journalist Jack Monroe and the Human Rights Campaign.

Here in WA the state government is considering similar reform, following a report released by the Law Reform Commission recommending a number of changes to the process. WA Labor also passed a motion to scrap the Gender Recognition Board at their bi-annual conference last year.
