Details of the case could not be reported until now as a suppression order prevented the media mentioning the conviction. The abuse occurred in Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral in 1996.

Cardinal Pell pleaded not guilty to the charges and his legal team have indicated he will appeal the verdict. When the verdict was read out in court in December 2018, Pell became the most senior Catholic cleric to be convicted of abusing children.

Pell has remained on bail following the verdict as he was due to undergo knee surgery. He will return to court for a plea hearing on 27th February and is expected to be sentenced in March.
