Freedom and Pride

It’s the silly season all over again, and everyone at Freedom Centre (FC) is excited! Fairday, FC’s Annual Open Day, the launch of new drop-in sessions, and our Parade entry are enough excitement to have us seeing rainbows!

FC will be at Fairday in a big way this year, with our usual info & fund raising stall and chill out space, but also with our Queer Map of Perth in the exhibition tent and Stars of the Future on the second stage!!

Stars of the Future will feature the amazing talents of the young members of the GLBTIQ community, particularly those attending the Freedom Centre to express themselves through the arts. So FC is asking all of Perth’s proud young Queers to register their interest to perform at Fairday for Stars of the Future 2010!

The Queer Map of Perth will see the 2006 FC Emerge Art Project’s wondrous Queer Map revitalized and brought into the present with our community’s stories that make Perth Queer! We want all community members to come and add their story to the bigger and better map at Fairday – come and find the map in the Exhibition tent near the community stalls section in Russell Square to add yours!

Throughout Pride festival FC will be open for our annual Open Day and the launch of two new monthly sessions. The FC Open Day on Sat October 23, 12-5pm, will launch a new Art Exhibition Space in the front room of the Centre which will provide a venue for young people to showcase their visual art talents. The new SkillShare session is for young people to share their skills with each other on the second Thursday of the month (5-8pm).

The other new drop-in session will break new ground, providing a safe space specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTTIQQ+ young people to meet, and get peer support and information. Freedom Centre is collaborating with Youthlink to run this session on the third Thursday of every month and support Perth’s ATSI LGBTTIQQ+ young people.

Finally we’ll celebrate the end of the festival in style, as always, at the Pride Parade where we’re asking young people in our community to join us with Glee in their heart to dress as Lady Gaga or KISS for our parade entry! We’ll have a professional body painter who will help your look come together at FC from 4pm on Saturday October 30.

So start collecting your Caution tape, Kermit toys, blonde or black wigs and silver accessories, and coordinating your outfits!

Check out our website www.freedom.org.au or contact Dani at Freedom Centre on info@freedom.org.au for more details or to register your interest in any of the activities.
