Fremantle Winter Music Festival

DSC_0049RTRFM’s Fremantle Winter Music Festival was a huge success for the community radio station last weekend.

The station, which relies on subscribers and fundraising events to remain on air, offered the largest version of the annual event to date.

When the Fremantle Music Festival started a few years ago it was presented at The Moore’s Building in the city’s centre, it later moved to North Fremantle taking over a number of venues for one night of the year. This year saw local bands and DJ’s playing at The Swan Hotel, and Swan Basement, the Railway Hotel, Mojo’s, plus the Mojo’s courtyard space and the North Fremantle Bowling Club. During the cold evening patrons walked the short distance between each venue sampling different styles of music.

At the Railway Hotel the sound was post indie with local instrumental band Apricot Rail (pictured above) headlining the venue. Also appearing was Guns, Fall Electric and Mt Mountain. Over at the Swan Hotel things took on a country flavour with Rachael and Henry Climb a Hill, Davey Cradock, The Polly Medlen Band and Amanda Merdzan. Downstair in the venues basement it was global pop with Grace Barbe, Rockwell and Groom and Seams playing. Over at Mojo’s things took a distinctly hip hop flavour with The Empty Cup (pictured below), Yarkhob and Ylem. Out the back of Mojo’s it was all disco with the Disco Science DJ’s Jack Doepel, Raw Sugar, Roland Pain and Leighton Head spinning tunes. Finally over at the  bowling club it was filled with noise rock from bands like Mental Powers and Doctorpus.
