Undermining marriage could trigger social collapse, according to the head of Australia’s largest trade union.
In a speech last month, Shop Distributors and Allied Employees Union head Joe De Bruyn used the example of the fall of the Roman Empire to deliver his point, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
‘Whenever the institution of marriage broke down, as it did in the Roman Empire, society did not survive,’ De Bruyn said.
He warned the ALP that civilisation could end if Labor changed its national platform later this year.
In November last year, De Bruyn slammed Labor for supporting the motion for MPs to consult their electorates on marriage, saying the party was ‘pandering’ to the Greens Party.
SDA is Australia’s largest union representing a number of companies in the retail, fast food and warehousing industries.
