Helen Childs: Poetry From Hel

Pride is a time when local talent can really come into its own. On October 7th, performance poet and alternative comedienne Helen Childs is launching her debut CD of ‘Poetry from Hel’ at The Velvet Lounge with a cast of wicked characters as well as guest performers Sue Clennell and Caroline Sambridge.

Poetry from Hel on the 7th of October is…

It’s basically a comedy cabaret, but a lot of it is poetry – humorous poetry. I’ll have two guest poets on doing humorous poetry as well. But mostly it’s me and I’ll be doing some of my comedy characters: Her Majesty the Queen, Traja Dee the Drag Queen from Hell an old granny character, a sex doll character who’s a sex doll rights activist – Dolly, and I also have a dead poet character which is basically Shakespeare.

Your comedy is…

Funny. It’s quite edgy; it’s kinda quirky; and it’s definitely black humour.

You toured in Victoria recently….

Yes, I did sort of a mini tour. I went to about 7 different venues with the Overload Poetry Festival, and I also did a gig for television as well, for Channel 31.

The show went…

Very well. It was on at some late hour, so I didn’t get to see it. But apparently it did go well, and I’ll be getting the video back to have a look. I did Dolly, the Sex Doll Rights Activist and they interviewed me. They also showed a program on sex slavery in Melbourne, looking at exploitation, and they thought it was very appropriate and a coincidence that I happened to do Dolly because Dolly talks about being a exploited sex object and a sex slave who has run away liberating the other sex toys.

Details we should know…

Tickets will be available to buy soon, and it’s a really nice venue. It’s very cruisy and kinda retro. We will be playing funky music in between the sets, and I think the drinks will be fairly cheap that night too.

Poetry from Hel CD launch will be held at the Velvet Lounge, 639 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley. Tix are $10, students $5, and there will be affordable drinks and pizzas. For further details see www.helcomedy.com or ph: 0405 162 149.
