India has undergone massive social reform when it comes to accepting the LGBT population into communities, but many say it still has a way to go. The Naz Foundation successfully won a nine year battle with the Government of New Deli in 2009, when homosexuality was legalised for the first time.
Although the decriminalisation of homosexuality has liberalised the Indian LGBT community, remaining daily struggles mean the fight isn’t over. Anuradha Mukerjee, a member of the Naz Foundation, recalls the extreme levels of harassment encountered by same-sex couples, ‘If two men were sitting in a pub they would be harassed and asked for money’.
Mukerjee deals with significant hate mail, who she claims are mainly from religious groups.
‘Homosexuality was this one issue where are religions are standing against us’, she said.
