PRIDE NEWS -Pride WA has announced the date for their annual quiz night. The official 2009 quiz night will be held at The Italian Club on Friday July 24 at 7.30pm. About 350 people attended Pride WA’s last quiz night, which raised approximately $2,500 for the Pride festival and $1,800 for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

PLEASURE, RISK, HIV and RESULTS -Part one of a seminar presenting preliminary data from recent HIV research projects has been told of changing attitudes and awareness surrounding topics such as sero sorting and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Called Pleasure, Risk & HIV, social research on the HIV epidemic in WA men, the seminar heard from Dr Graham Brown, president of AFAO (Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations) as he outlined the most recent findings from the Perth Gay Community Periodic Survey. Dr Brown also discussed the Western Australian Overseas Acquired HIV Social Research Project, which looks at WA males who have acquired HIV overseas since the year 2000. Findings from the study will assist future project development to improve support for people living with HIV. Part one of the survey was held on May 28, with part two, on the Pleasure and sexual health and Sero converted studies scheduled for June 4.
GAY COUPLLING SKILLS -Relationships Australia will be running a weekend course specifically for GLBT couples entitled Together Forever for Gay Couples. The course is based on Relationships Australia’s other successful relationship courses and covers topics such as expectations and needs, communications, conflict resolution, harmony and intimacy. The weekend will be held at the Relationships Australia head office in West Leederville from July 17-19 and costs $160 per couple. Together Forever runs over one weekend, with courses being held from 6.30pm-9pm on the Friday, 1pm-5.30pm on the Saturday and 10am-1pm on the Sunday. TAKEN ON THE FLOOR -Approximately 180 people attended Take Me On The Floor last month, leading organisers to declare the night a huge success. The OUTDANCE event was held at the Mt Hawthorn Community Centre and Outdancer, Jan, said it ‘exceeded all expectations’ and they will be planning another, similar event towards the end of the year. The Outreach Community Centre ran the kitchen on the night, selling cool drinks and cupcakes to raise $400, which will go back into the community centre.
SURVEY SEEKS BISEXUAL WOMEN -Curtin University postgraduate student, Tosca Dilkes-Hall is looking for more participants for her study into the experiences of bisexual women in same-sex relationships. Ms Dilkes-Hall is undertaking a Master of Counselling Psychology and says she hopes her research will ‘fill the gap in literature, enriching our understanding of the experiences of bisexual women in same-sex relationships and informing the provision of psychological services to this unique population.’ To take part in the research study or for more information on the criteria required, contact Ms Dilkes-Hall on 0404 825 742 or tosca.dilkes-hall@postgrad.curtin.edu.au
