Local News Briefs – November

World AIDS Day
The West Australian AIDS Council (WAAC) and Loton Park Tennis Club will be hosting events in December for World AIDS Day. WAAC will be celebrating the advances made in the fight against HIV on December 1 at the AIDS Memorial in Robertson Park, starting from 5.30pm. Loton Park will also be holding a Men’s Day as a fundraiser for World AIDS Day on Sunday December 5 from 2pm. The event is men only with a live DJ, a sausage sizzle and an afternoon of tennis for just $10.

Your Disco Needs You
Connections Nightclub is polling Perth residents on what they want from Northbridge venues in the future. Connections has opened the questionaire to everyone but have said they were particularly interested in the views of older LGBT people, the arts community and Northbridge locals. Support the community and community-run businesses by completing the survey at www.coakesconsulting.com/connections.html.

Tennis Anyone?
Get the tennis shorts and racquets out as Perth’s LGBT-friendly tennis club Loton Park reopens for its 2010/11 season. The club has restarted their friendly social tennis matches on Saturdays afternoons from 1pm. On Friday November 19, Loton Park will be hosting a free Community Sundowner from 6pm with drinks, tunes and a sausage sizzle. With Christmas around the corner, Loton Park will be holding their annual Christmas Party on Friday December 17. For more information, contact enquiries@lotonpark.com.au or call Mikey on 0418 346 535.

Furry Friends Fashion
Perth’s Biggest Loser star Alison Braun will be hosting a catwalk fashion parade fit for some furry friends this month. RSPCA will be hosting their All Things Bright and Beautiful Fete with the help of Braun who will be presenting the fashion parade. Braun said she was often inspired by the hard work carried out daily by the RSPCA saving and re-homing animals in need. The fete is at the RSPCA Headquarters, 108 Malaga Drive, Malaga on Sunday November 21.

GLCS Coming Events
Gay and Lesbian Community Services (GLCS) is looking for new volunteers to help keep their telephone counseling and information line stay open. The telephone counselor training course is planned to start in March 2011. GLCS will also be hosting a picnic this month for women interested in attending (or who have done so in the past) the six-week Women on Women (WOW) course, the next of which will be held in January. For more information on any of these events, to RSVP for the picnic or register for the WOW course, go to www.glcs.org.au.
