Velvet, the divine discotheque circus, officially opens in Perth tonight. The acclaimed cabaret show has been a huge success around Australia and overseas, and now it comes to Fringe World for the very first time.

One of the stars of the show is adored singer Marcia Hines, who tells us she had no hesitation in signing up to grueling schedule of six shows a week.

“This is my Manger’s show, so of course I said yes,” Marcia laughed as we caught up after a media presentation of the show. “We’d spoken about it for a few years and he and our Director Craig Illot got together and created this.”

“It’s a great show to a part of, its a great ensemble. We started with thirteen in the very beginning and did the show for none or ten months, and only two people have not been able to come back.”

Marcia said the cast had become a family, “We will always be a family, even those people who left, they were pretty cool.”

Marcia said the Perth audiences who had come to the preview performance had been “loud and nice”.

The singer, whose career has spanned five decades said she was happy that new audiences are always discovering her work and a disco revival have brought her a lot of new fans.

Marcia told us she had no idea why some of her albums have never been made available digitally, making some of her classic records from ’70s and ’80s collectible items for DJs.

“I don’t why that is, but people have told me that some of them are hard to find.” Marcia said.

The show is one of the highlights of Fringe World and runs until Sunday 19th February.
