More than a One-Trick Pony…

Photography by Penny Lane

Dapple-Grey accessories are cute and kitsch with a strong sense of nostalgia thrown in for good measure. This label is the brainchild of local designer Renee Glastonbury, another wunderkind from The Ballroom Studio Project. Her collections to date have already set a sharp stylistic standard, and with the release of her new range entitled One Trick Pony, Glastonbury is set to show that she is anything but.

Her debut centered around the recreation of an old family heirloom that had belonged to her grandmother. The piece was a beautiful broach, featuring two sparrows, that, facing each other in flight held between them a delicate thread of chain. While the original had faded and rusted, Glastonbury’s bold new version was created in acrylic and played heavily on the silhouette and shape of the original. Her next collection plundered the depths of The Antique Roadshow for a range of pieces, alluding to the shapes of bric a brac furniture and retro room ware. Gramophones, delicate cuckoo clocks and fantastic flying ducks were first created using a stainless steel base. Glastonbury then overlaid these with stained and varnished wood silhouettes which created work imbued with Old World charm.

Now Glastonbury has taken Dapple-Grey to the circus to create a more mature and abstract collection of necklaces, broaches and rings that draw on the circular shapes of fun-parks. Powder-coated metal pieces capture a playful sense of exhilaration, while Glastonbury continues her use of bold silhouettes with signature works including rabbits being plucked from hats and hot air balloons soaring skyward. All up, Glastonbury’s work is perfectly suited for ladies looking to add a sense of elegance to their clothing and gentlemen who understand and revel in the whimsical nature of fashion.

Dapple-Grey is available from Lala Orange, Method, and Aspects in Kings Park. It is also available online from www.lalaorange.com and www.shopmoose.com.au. Or simply visit www.dapple-grey.com.au to discover the breadth of Glastonbury’s ingenuity.
