SceneOUT: August

Major Break sold out and went off. Told you it would.

And how ‘bout the line for Connections on Saturday night just gone by? That’s gotta be the first time I’ve seen the queers stretching that far down the block since opening night post-renovation. Get-in-early is clearly the tip there.

Especially because, once you do, you can be treated to that pole-dancing chicka-babe pulling her sexy moves on stage. I don’t care which way you swing – she’s hott and guaranteed to get you revved up for the night.

The girls were also pretty revved up for the 4th Birthday of the Women’s Sundowner at Grapeskin, complete with party bags and swizzle sticks. Congratulations to Pride for a long running and very successful event. If you want to know what it’s all about, it’ll be on again in August – Wednesday the 8th at Grapeskin Winebar in Northbridge.

Speaking of the girls – the next installment from the Lick crew is due this August. This time around they present Fabulous Les Vegas – Saturday the 17th from 9pm onwards at Connections. There will be prizes, girls (of course!) and even Elvis. Though methinks he’s gonna have to do some fast talking to be allowed into a lezza event – maybe Elvis is a transman? Tickets $10 on the door.

Down at the other end of the spectrum, the Bears will be holding their monthly social on the 11th of August. The men-only action kicks off in their Den – 1 Vincent St, Mount Lawley. Open to hairy, masculine men – and the men who like ‘em. Growl.

If you’d prefer a little less testosterone, and a lot more glitter, then head instead to the Italian Club on the same night, where Club West will be holding the Pink Ball. If you want a table, book right now. Otherwise, a fabulous night can still be had for a mere $10 for standing room. All proceeds go to AIDS related charities, making for a fun AND worthwhile evening.

Another for AIDS charity event, StyleAID celebrates 10 years on August 10th when Perth’s best designers will be taking over the catwalk at Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre to raise money for the WA Aids Council. This year’s theme is Reflections and if the disco balls and rumours of a specially constructed stage for the event are anything to go by, it will be an event many reflect on for years to come.

The other, slightly more highbrow, queer event of note for the month is, of course, the Pride Professional’s Sundowner on Wednesday 15th at the Brisbane.

Meanwhile, the Court continues to generate heat in its beer garden, and it ain’t just from the heaters. Watch the sparks fly at Courtship Tuesdays, still the only gay and lesbian single’s night in town. Then, there’s Unite Thursdays and some serious weekend dance parties and shows. Get there early or shiver in the queue.

Steppin’ away from the bright lights of queersville, there’s no shortage of things to do out on the mainstream scene.

If you want to catch one of the world’s top female DJ’s (who just so also happens to frequently make it into the world’s top 100 sexiest women), then Rise nightclub, in all its glo-stick-y, gator-y glory will be the place to be. The UK’s Anne Savage will be queen of the decks there for a high energy party on August 17th.

Also on August 17th, Ambar will be playing host to DJ Hyper. It’s been a year since the man graced the Ambar decks and he continues to go from strength to strength, not just with his Y2K style compilations, but also now with own label and even a band! A man worth catching out of the current batch of breaks DJs around.

Or, finally, for something a little alternative consider the RTR FM Radiothon opening party, August 11th in the Cultural Centre. Whatever your passion, there’s an assortment of electro to be had, from new wave through to hip hop and drum and bass. Check out the RTR website for more details.

All in all, not a bad lot of choices for deepest darkest winter.
