SceneOUT with Aram Hosie

I’m going to guess that on February 26th I was not the only gay in the village sitting bleary eyed in front of my computer, under slept and nursing a sore head, after a double banger (don’t be dirty!) of a weekend.

Saturday night, Feb 24th saw Bling @ Connections – thrown as a fundraiser for Pride. It took a little while to get going but ended up pumping around the 2am mark. There was an air of elegance on the deck courtesy of the grand piano and sultry jazz sounds, whilst inside pounded to a more traditional beat.

Then Sunday, a smaller-than-I’d-expected crowd hit The Court for Boy George and were treated to back to back sets of a quality not often heard on the Perth queer scene. Lisa Loud was the support act, but the combination of her high energy, interactive DJ presence and the deep hard beats she put down won everyone in the crowd over, and very nearly outshone the main event. Boy George’s set felt a little disconnected in places, and there was a discernable oops or two but over all it was creatively built as he played up to a clearly adoring crowd. Best of all, he played the approachable super star – stopping to chat to a few on the way to his waiting car when he was done.

Earlier in the month there were wet tee-shirt comps and titty colloquiums galore at The Court for Lick’s Splash party – all served good effect we hear, with Perth’s lesbian population getting wet en masse.

But that was then…

This month, Connections serves up its usual weekly fair, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, with a one-night only return of Lesbian Mud Wrestling on the 21st March. For old times sake.

Don’t forget too, that the outdoor terrace we all so love to swan about on is open from 8pm on Fridays.

Saturday March 17th on the terrace DJ Tim Brown is joined by live vocalist, the ever sultry and delectable Georgia McDonnell-Adams. So get there early, snare a spot and enjoys a bevvie as you watch the punters trickle in.

The Court too, ticks over all its weekly favourites 7days a week, and no doubt will have something special on offer Easter Long Weekend, so keep your diaries free.

The Climaxx boys are back, with Homo A-Go-Go at Gilkinsons, April 7. If you’re homo, clearly, you should go-go. Unless you’re a girl homo, in which case you might want to go, instead, to Playboy Mansion, thrown by the Lick girls. Decadence galore, they promise. It’s on the same night at Connections nightclub. (Not sure what I think bout all this Melbourne-style boy-girl segregation, but there you go…)

Pride Women’s Sundowner will again be offering sophisticated schmoozing on March 14, and we hear there’s a rumbling of getting the Professional Sundowner, or some incarnation of, back up and running – so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, away from the pub/club scene, for those of you for whom life is cabaret – ClubWest is throwing its next bash on March 24. The Fairy Ball will open its doors at 7:30pm the Italian Club, and it’s best to book before hand. Along with the usual wine, song and dance, Absolute Kylie will be making an appearance to up the sequin quota for the night. Best of all, proceeds go to charity.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty on in heterosville. Check out, for example, Queer-friendly Ambar when the play host to JDS (a must-see, in my opinion), then Mark Dynamix, and Bass Cleph on March 16, 23, and 24 respectively.

Party safe!
