Views Sought on Domestic Violence Law Reforms

Domestic ViolenceThe WA Law Reform Commission is accepting submissions on the proposed reforms to the state’s domestic violence laws until the end of this month. Amongst the raft of proposals put forward the project’s discussion paper is a proposal that would allow people to check if their partner has a violent past.

The proposal was put forward by the Women’s Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services and is based on a law that will be introduced in Britain in March. Commonly known as ‘Clare’s Law’, the proposal has been successfully trialled in four British cities. Alongside allowing people to access a register of domestic abuse histories the British legislation also allows police officers to inform people they believe may be harmed of their partners past.
