Senate seek public submissions on marriage equality plebiscite

The Senate have launched an inquiry into the matter of a popular vote, in the form of a plebiscite or referendum, on marriage equality in Australia.

Greens LGBTIQ spokesperson Senator Janet Rice says this is the chance for people to share their own stories about what a plebiscite would mean for them.

“We’re so close to marriage equality but Tony Abbott insists on holding us back with delay tactics, like suggestions of a referendum or plebiscite,” Ms Rice said.

“The Greens have always stood for a vote in the Parliament on marriage equality. The High Court has made it clear that this is the way to go. It’s the quickest and easiest path to marriage equality.”

Senator Rice urges voters to make submissions to the inquiry to prevent Prime Minister Tony Abbott from being able to make a “Captain’s Pick” on the wording and timing of a plebiscite.

“Love will prevail. Australia will have marriage equality. The Greens will make sure this discrimination is ended as soon as possible.”
