September 19 – 26 is Bisexual Awareness Week, a time for recognising and celebrating members of the community who fall under the bi+ umbrella.

Initially celebrated on just one day, the tradition was kicked off by bisexual rights activists in the United States back in 1999. Following the success and popularity of the event around the globe, nonprofit organisation BiNet USA declared a full week to focus on the B in LGBTIQ+.

Definitions and understandings of bisexuality have changed and expanded over time, challenging traditional gender binaries and including more fluid identities. People who identify as pansexual, polysexual, curious, flexible, fluid and queer may all sit comfortably under the wider bi+ umbrella.

Miley Cyrus, trans reality star Jazz Jennings, rapper Angel Haze, actor Alan Cumming and our August cover girl Margaret Cho all publicly identify as bisexual or bi+.

GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), one of the co-founding bodies of BiWeek, has shared a video of bi-identifying people speaking on their experiences outside the infamous Stonewall hotel in New York.

Bisexual Awareness Week runs from September 19th – 26th.
