The rally which is scheduled to take place in the Murray Street Mall at 1pm on Saturday afternoon will call on the government to allow allow a free vote on the issue and schedule a vote on the legislation in parliament.

At the beginning of the week the Labor party announced that it would not support the government’s proposed marriage plebiscite. As the government does not have the numbers the plebiscite legislation is doomed for failure in the senate.

Despite the inevitable legislative dead end, the government is forging on with passing the legislation through parliament. Advocates for marriage equality are calling on the government to drop the plebiscite and move to a free vote.

All supporters of marriage equality have been invited to join the demonstration and march in the city from 1pm.
