Alison Moyet's 'The Rarest Birds' is a love song for the LGBTIQ+ community

Alison Moyet has released a second single from her stunning new album Other. The singer has described The Rarest Birds as a paean to LGBTQ people, and to her home Brighton.

“The Rarest Birds is a paean to LGBTQ, to Brighton, to coming out after the darkest nights into the arms of those that delight in your flight. From me to you,” Moyet said in a media release.

“This song celebrates a place where a person can be who they were meant to be. It celebrates solidarity when it comes to individualism. It holds hands and calls time on silence, stillness, fear. It celebrates beautiful girls born boys. Stronger boys for being born girls. Freedom to identify where best we fit.”

The powerful ballad is one of the highlights from the singer’s ninth studio album. The album sees Moyet re-teaming with producer Guy Sigsworth, who has previously worked with Madonna, Bjork and Imogen Heap.

He also collaborated with Moyet on her 2013 album The Minutes, which saw the singer making a return to electronic filled music.

The video for the song was directed by award-winning photographer and videographer Steve Gullick. The video explores themes of diversity and features Moyet’s daughter Caitlin Ballard.

The clip was filmed in Brighton, the city that Moyet made her home a few years ago. Speaking to BUILD LDN Moyet said

“I changed my life utterly in the last five years, I moved to Brighton which is a town…that is full of this wonderful diversity. I’ve long been supported by the LGBT community, and many of my beloveds are included in that group of people.

“This is a song that describes life in Brighton for these people that so often have been left feeling ‘other’ somewhere else, and who come to this place like this and be surrounded by people who love them and celebrate them.” Moyet said.

Moyet first came to prominence as one half of electronic duo Yazoo, before launching a successful solo career in 1985 with her debut album Alf. The singer continued to have hits throughout the 1980s.

Throughout her career Moyet has explored a variety of musical styles, in the 1990’s she released a series of albums that were firmly in the indie rock genre, later she moved into the trip-hop genre and also showed her vocal talents on an album of standards.

Moyet will be touring Australia later this year as part of her three month long world tour. She’ll play the Riverside Theatre on 4 October. The last time the singer played live in Australia was in 1987.
