After success in cities around the world, West Australian Music (WAM) have revealed an exciting new initiative for young musicians.

Girls Rock! is a week-long day camp with a mission to empower young female, transgender and gender diverse people through music and education.

The campers will have the opportunity to hone their skills on an instrument of their choice (guitar, bass, drums or vocals) and join a band with other campers, write a song and then perform at the Girls Rock! showcase at the end of the week.

WAM say they hope the camps help to tackle the issue of gender imbalance in the music industry, with a focus on creativity, positivity, community and empowerment, under the guidance of Perth musician and teacher Em Burrows.

“I have heard so many established female musicians saying that they wish they had something like Girls Rock! when they were starting out as song writers and performers!” Burrows said.

“Girls Rock! is such a great program and a great way for Perth to nurture its next generation of musicians. It gives young people the chance to learn from experienced musicians and industry personnel in such a welcoming environment.”

“I’m so excited to work with WAM to get this program off the ground!”

Girls Rock! will kick off in January 2019. For more information head to wam.org.au

The program is open to female, transgender and non-binary people aged 11 – 17 with some experience in guitar, bass, drums or vocals.
