Taiwan had a big setback last month when the majority of citizens voted against allowing same-sex couples the right to wed.

The LGBTI community has had a recent win though, with over 4,000 same-sex couples officially registered their relationships with the government.

According to Taiwan News 3,951 coupes have officially registered their relationships with the highest numbers of same-sex couples being recorded in Taipei, New Taipei and Taichung.

The government is still required to find a way for same-sex couples to have all the same tights as heterosexual couples because the country’s highest court order them to do so, but the referendum result means it can’t be access the marriage, although a parallel gay marriage option is a possibility.
