Acapocalypse opens at Fringe World soon. It an epic throwdown singing battle between two teams, a battle of epic proportions as 80’s divas riff-off against modern millennials in a pitch-perfect battle to the death.

On one side there’s the decade of shoulder pads, power ballads and soap stars becoming pop stars, while at the turn of the millenium it was the era of boy bands, rap battles and pokemon.

We chatted to performer Jordan Dunne who is on the 80’s team about why the fashion and music that decade is so much better than what came at the start of the new millennium.

What makes the music of the 80’s better than the tunes millenials listen to?

The 80s was an era of some of the greatest artists of all time: Bowie, Queen, Michael Jackson were once-in-a-generation performers. The charts were absolutely stacked with an overabundance of incredible music. And the songs were so much fun!

There was a real intensity of emotion all around, the dance songs were dancier and the power ballads more powerful. The fact that 40 years on we are still rocking out to 80s classic says so much about the timelessness and quality of the music created in that decade.

How big should an 80’s shoulder pad be?

The bigger, the better! It’s very important for your style to be as fierce as possible during a riff off. You want your opponent to know you are not to be messed with and there is nothing better than an 80s power suit to do that. Think Heli-pad not shoulder pad 😉

What is your favourite 80’s power ballad, and why is it better than all the other power ballads?
Phil Collins – In the Air Tonight. That drum fill never fails to make me air-drum along and I challenge anyone else to resist. We give this fantastic tune our best shot in the show cause if you’re not going to give Phil Collins everything you’ve got then there’s no point even trying.

Which is better 80’s Kylie or 00’s Kylie?

80’s Kylie is a damn icon. A talented singer/dancer/actor/fashion icon who has been performing for over 30 years, she isn’t titled the Princess of Pop for nothing. 00’s Kylie may be great with a makeup brush but she ain’t got those kinds of skills up her sheer sleeves.

What should you always pack for the apocalypse?

Vital things for the Aca-pocalypse: A pitch pipe, Some DEVASTATING trash talk, Backup dancer and most importantly, your aca-squad. An Acapella singer never goes into battle alone.

Acapocalypse is at The Edith Spiegeltent in Yagan Square from 5-8 February, get ticks vias Fringe World.
