Advocates call on Labor to protect LGBTI+ teachers in religious schools

LGBTI+ advocates have welcomed Labor’s announcement of legislation to protect LGBTI+ students from discrimination in faith-based schools, but want to see protections for teachers and school staff as well.

“Labor’s push to protect LGBTI kids from discrimination is very welcome, but it must also protect LGBTI teachers and other school workers,” says Rodney Croome of just.equal.

“Labor is the party of worker rights so it should stand up for workers in religious schools and not throw them under the school bus.”

Opposition Leader in the Senate Penny Wong says Labor will introduce their bill in a bid to force the government to take action.

Earlier this week just.equal release a survey of LGBTI+ Australians that showed overwhelming support for protecting not only LGBTI+ students, but staff and teachers as well.

A Senate inquiry report was also released earlier this week which recommended that more consideration was given to protecting teachers and staff.

The report made reference to Tasmanian law, which has not allowed such discrimination for over 20 years.
