Alpha Booking Agency is Australia’s first music booking agency that is exclusive to female and LGBTIQ+ talent.

The group was established by music industry worker Kailei Ginman earlier this year, with a mission to support and empower women and queer people in the music world.

Over her career, Ginman has worked with everyone from Salt N Pepa to The Vines to Havana Brown and hopes to share her wealth of experience with her talent.

Speaking to OUTinPerth, Ginman says it was not only her own experiences, but also issues she had seen her past talent face that inspired her to get Alpha started.

“I have definitely found adversity being a female in music, from all kinds of people within the industry from colleagues to people that I’ve had to work with for nightclubs.

“I know that my female talent have found the same issues in their same right as well. So it was really about identifying that and wanting to change that.”

Ginman acknowledges that women and the LGBTI+ community face discrimination in all sectors, but there are some particular challenges in the music community.

“I think it’s tough in the EDM space because female talent are often sexualised, they’re often not respected for their talent. It’s very male focused. Even just from the patrons trying to access the female talent in that space as well.”

“Most people in senior positions in music are male, and it’s always been that way. We need to evolve that.”

Ginman says that she hopes Alpha can play a role in instigating change for women and queer people in Australian music.

“I think that starting a conversation, which this has done, so many wonderful strong women are talking at the moment. That’s the first step for things to be noticed and start changing!”
