Bumblebeez – Prince Umberto & The Sister of Ill – Modular

This is Bumblebeez’ first real attempt at producing an album as a coherent whole, and though the results are not immediately as impressive as one might hope, repeated listens have put me firmly in their corner. ‘Prince Umberto And The Sister Of Ill’ straddles several genres at once, and the same could be said of many individual tracks. More guitar-oriented tunes, such as Freak Ya Loneliness, are the least engaging because the sound is a little more conventional and punched up with some noisy flourishes. Straight-up party tracks such as Clubb Clubb, however, hit the spot perfectly. The overall sound alternates between shiny and dirty, cheeky and aggressive, and never loses its all-important sense of fun. Pia’s goofy/sexy vocals are the icing on the cake. –Stuart Miles
