Did the new season of Doctor Who just hint that one of the time traveller’s new companions is bisexual?

During the shows latest episode which aired on Monday night, viewers got to meet the mother of Yasmin Khan – one of the new companions in the show.

Yaz’s Mum Najia asks her daughter if she’s dating The Doctor, who is now played by Jodie Whittaker. The Doctor answers “I don’t think so. Are we?”

Later in the show Yaz’s Mum Najia asks if she’s dating fellow companion Ryan played by Tosin Cole. The two sequences have lead to fans asking if Yaz is bisexual. At any rate she’s got a very cool and non judgemental mother.

The show has a long history of including same-sex attracted characters including Jack Harkness, who got his own spin-off show Torchwood, Silurian Madame Vastra and her human wife Jenny and lesbian companion Bill Potts.

Chris Chibnall, who took over as the show runner this season, has previously said that when Russel T Davies rebooted the show he imbued it with queer characters, and he has every intention of keeping up the number of characters whose sexuality is from across the spectrum.

The current season saw a new actor take on the lead role of The Doctor. Jodie Whittaker is the first woman to play the role. Having the show’s central character change genders has been praised by LGBTI rights advocates.

Doctor Who airs on the ABC on Monday nights and is also available on iView.
