FAMILIES PICNIC FOR FREEDOM
Families of all types and sizes gathered for the Families for Freedom Community Picnic at the Fremantle Esplanade on Sunday October 11 to show their support for same-sex relationship recognition. The 300-strong crowd was entertained by performances from WA Sambanistas and the Gay and Lesbian Singers while speakers from the National Union of Students, the Greens and members of the GLBT community addressed issues of relationship recognition and the idea of family. Community spokesperson, Kitty Hawkins said the event fulfilled its goal of interaction with a broader section of the community and was a lot of fun. ‘We had a much more diverse crowd than we’ve had at previous events and lots more engagement from the general public.’ To keep up to date on coming Families for Freedom events go to the website: www.families4freedom.info
QUEER RADIO IDEAS WANTED
RTRFM 92.1 is looking for new ideas for both broadcast and podcast radio programs. RTRFM currently has 49 programs covering a various range of topics and music, making them one of Perth’s most diverse and progressive broadcasters. The station already podcasts some of their on-air programs but is looking to commission some specifically podcast based programs that would be delivered through the station’s online delivery platforms. RTRFM has broadcast GLBT programs in the past, such as Open Closets but currently does not have any in production. General Manager, Graeme Watson says he would love to see some more GLBT input at RTRFM and the station provides training for those with no previous experience in radio. For more information on how to make a submission and requirements, call 9260 9200 or log on to the website: www.rtrfm.com.au
MURDOCH PRIDE DAY?
Students and representatives from Murdoch University’s Queer Collective have been disappointed by the university’s decision to fly the Rainbow flag for only one day during Pride Week. This year, the Murdoch Guild Queer Collective celebrated Pride Week with get togethers and workshops on topics such as bi-phobia and ageism in the queer community and had planned to fly the Rainbow flag from October 5 to 9 until university officials informed them they could raise the flag only on the Thursday. ‘It was a bit disappointing that we could only get one day but its better to have something than nothing,’ said Queer Collective representative, Michael Pilkington. Despite flag misunderstandings, the collective have hailed Pride Week a success. ‘It was extremely positive and we achieved a lot,’ said Pilkington.
