Inspired by the hugely popular and long-running Canberra Bush Dance, Adrian Tilby and Michael Della Maddalena have worked with local community organisations and businesses to bring the hoedown to life in Perth.

To be held at East Perth’s City Farm, the music and dancing will be led by the legendary Mucky Duck Bush Band, a WA institution that has been playing folk and bush music since the 1970s.

Describing the event Tilby said the evening would be filled with classic tunes and dances.

“On the night they will be playing classic polka and folk music while calling the moves to each dance. Expect to hear nostalgic classics such as Heel and Toe, Click Go the Sheers, Hokey Pokey and Waltzing Matilda.

“People aren’t sure what to expect when they hear about the Barn Dance. Sometimes their first reaction is ‘that’s great, but what’s a Barn Dance?’, so we explain: ‘Imagine if Brokeback Mountain was a musical and it was crossed with a B&S Ball.'”

Country girl and Dolly Parton fan Barbie Q will host the evening and promises plenty of surprises and entertainment.

President of Pride WA Francis Burgess said Pride was  proud to be involved in the event which is bringing several community groups together.

“To make Barn Dance a reality a number of groups have linked together and each group will play a specific role on the night, these groups include Vic Park Pride, Pride WA, GRAI Inc., The Pinnacle Foundation, Bears Perth, Loton Park Tennis Club and Richmond Wellbeing.” Burgess said.

Perth MP John Carey has thrown his support behind the event, and will be on hand to judge the best dressed on the evening.

“This is set to be a brilliant event – and brings together our community in a different way from the usual events on the scene. It’s open to everyone, will be a lot of fun and will support not-for-profit LGBTQI community groups.” Carey said.

Barn Dance takes place from 7pm to midnight on 10 August 2019 at Perth City Farm next to Claisebrook train station. Tickets are on sale now and an early bird price is available until 13 June. Connections Nightclub is offering all ticket holders free entry until 1am.
