Musician Jason Mraz has shared his experiences of fearing discrimination when he was younger.
The singer said he was aware of his bisexuality when he was younger but feared being open about it when he saw how other LGBT people were treated. The singer grew up in a small town in rural Virginia.
“I saw how [gay and lesbian people] get harassed and I heard the language around it and that scared me,” Mraz said. “I thought ‘if I’m gay, what does that mean for me, my community, my family and career?”’
“It was a struggle. I was nervous about what my family would think.”
Mraz shared his experiences with The Daily Telegraph. Over the years the performer has slowly begun to be more open about his experiences.
In an interview with Billboard last year he shared how his wife was accepting of this bisexuality and how he likes the native American concept of being two-spirited.
“I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?” Mraz told Billboard.
“And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that.”
The singers career kicked off in 2002 with his hit single The Remedy (I Won’t Worry). His sixth album Know was released in 2018.
Mraz will be heading to Perth in 2020 to play A Day on the Green, joining him on the bill is British singer James Blunt and Australian singer Olympia.
