The Sweet Taste Of Success

GLCS’s SWEET Bake Off Fundraiser was a huge success and is set to become an annual event!! On Sunday 18th October we celebrated our 35th Birthday in High Tea style at The Court, with some exquisite cakes in the SWEET Bake Off, and a crowd of almost 300 people!

Ms Mable LIT UP the stage as our host – no really, to cut our scrumptious Official Birthday cake (very generously donated by Cupid’s Delight) Ms Mable dressed as a candle and almost set the Court’s disco ball alight!! That’s all while conducting a ‘happy birthday’ chorus and gasps from the SWEET crowd.

When the idea for SWEET was conceived, we never dreamed we would receive 37 Bake Off entries plus four Professional Cupcake entries and that all of the entries would be of SUCH a high quality.

SWEET Judges Narelda Jacobs, Mark Reid, Aram Hosie and Trish Langdon all agreed that the ‘Absolute Pride – Celebrate Diversity’ cake by Rebecca Lee was SWEET’s Best in Show Winner.

Winners of the SWEET Bake Off categories were;
• Jane Brown won Best Decorated for her ‘SWEET High Tea’ teacup and teapot cake
• The Etherington, Give It A Go Baking Group won Most Erotic cake for their entry ‘Erotic Is Whatever you Think It Is’.
• Leonie Woodley won Best Tasting Baked Good for her red velvet cupcakes
• ARA (Animal Rights Advocates) won the Best Entry by a Community Group with their vegan cake
• My Yummy Vice won the Professionals Cupcake category (see their profile and the other professionals’, below, who all generously supported SWEET)

After recovering from a good dose of sugar, having tasted over 24 cakes and slices our judges had the following to say about SWEET.

‘In the words of Edina and Patsy, the GLCS Bake Off was absolutely fabulous sweetie darling! I was very honoured to be a judge as I had the opportunity to taste the delicacies on offer. The cakes and slices from some extremely talented amateur cooks were fantastic, as were the gorgeous cup cakes from the professional chefs. I had a great time and the scales showed it the next day!’ WA AIDS Council’s Trish Langdon.

‘Sweet was an amazing day that bought together a range of Perth’s GLBTQI bakers to create some sensational sweet treats that I enjoyed tasting and judging. It was so fantastic to see so many of our community groups also take part by baking and creating some truly inspirational cakes. I enjoyed every mouthful and look forward to being involved again next year!’ 2009 Pride Patron, Mark Reid.

With the day full of so much SWEET cake and fabulous entertainment from David Gray, Rebecca Daniels and Riot Gunk, we ran out of time to officially thank everyone who supported, sponsored and contributed to SWEET! We would like to extend our greatest thanks to everyone involved with making SWEET what is was, including our Hosts, Judges, Entertainers, all Bake Off entrants, and our sponsors; The Court, OUTinPerth, Spice Magazine, Upper Crust Cooking Classes, The Cooking Professor, Le Chic Hair Studio, Greens Senator Hon. Lynn McClaren, Sexual Focus and the Coode St Cafe.

SWEET proved to be a fantastic community event and it raised much needed funds for GLCS whilst acknowledging our 35 years of service to the community. We are already planning for next years SWEET and look forward to seeing you there!
