The Time is Now

Getting fit and losing weight is one of those things I’m always meaning to do, and I have stabs at it now and again but after a few weeks I return to my usually ways. I don’t think I’m alone; in fact I can’t be, statistics say that the numbers of people who are like me, overweight and unfit are growing every year.

Twenty years ago I weighed 70 kilograms, but admittedly I had a job that involved eight hours of exercise a day. Yes in the early ’90s I was a dancer. When I had a career change and started working in the gaming industry I gained a little weight between 1991 and 2001 my weight grew to be 90 kilograms, a little overweight maybe but not too bad. So what happened over the last decade for my weight to steadily grow to a now shocking 135 kilograms?

A number of career changes saw me move from a Casino management job where I was on my feet and running around all day to roles in media in filmmaking, animation and radio that were sitting behind a desk, using a computer. Where I used to go to dance classes or running, as time progressed I stopped, too many appointments, too many projects and too many functions to go to instead.

When OUTinPerth Publisher Alex Maltby proposed that we both get fit and healthy and share our experiences with the readers of OUTinPerth at first I was a little reluctant, my role is largely about writing about other people not myself. Then I realised that going on this journey quite publicly may also make me more likely to succeed and that this is a journey that many other people may also want to start on.

Over the next few months I’ll share every step of this challenge, from my initial Doctor’s visit, to finding a form of exercise that I don’t despise, to exorcising bad eating habits. I hope you’ll share your experiences too feel free to drop me a line by clicking on my name below.
