Troye Sivan does not want to be 'a gay icon'

Singer Troye Sivan says he has no ambitions to become a ‘gay icon’ because he doesn’t represent the diversity of experience with LGBTI communities.

“I’m one voice of so many that are missing,” Troye said during a recent interview with Another Man. “There are plenty of other people who need to be heard first.”

The singer has however delivered two tracks drenched in queer sexuality, both brimming with confidence. On My My My he sang about getting his tongue between another man’s teeth and new track Bloom is a song he described as a ‘Bop about bottoming’.

Troye said growing up he saw so few representations of queer romance but he was glad now that there were many representations of gay romance and sexuality, and while he was excited to share where he was through his music, he’s glad there’s other artists giving different perspectives.

“With people like Hayley Kiyoko and Brockhampton, we’re starting to get, finally, a diverse group of different LGBTQ perspectives. That’s why I politely don’t want to take on that ‘gay icon’ thing. I’m one voice of so many that are missing, and so I’m just trying to tell my story, and right now I’m having so much fun in my life, I feel confident, I’m just enjoying myself, and so that was really important to me to express.” Troye said.
