UnitingCare West Celebrates Diversity

Bunbury Senior High school in collaboration with UnitingCare West True Colours Program held a yarn bombing event at the school on Thursday October 18th to celebrate Pridefest. Student Services Manager Kelly Anderson and True Colours Team Leader Sharon Waters yarn bombed the student services office and front of the school with assistance from students. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of diverse gender and sexuality. The event had a language focus, targeting definitions, stereotyping and derogatory names. Kelly described the yarn bombing as a non-permanent form of graffiti. The event linked to Pridefest through the theme of definitions and its use of colour and art to promote diversity.

The exhibition featured works by youth from the local True Colours peer support group, and students at Bunbury High were invited to create their own ‘yarn bombs’ leading up to and during the day. Several students and staff engaged with the project, admiring the art work and reading definitions. Students and staff were also invited to write their own definition to add to the yarn creations.

Safer Schools Project Officer Helen Robinson congratulated Bunbury Senior High School Staff and Students for their active engagement with the project. The school also held a concert and sausage sizzle during Social Inclusion Week in November. Helen has recently returned from the National Safe Schools Symposium in Melbourne where best practice from across the nation was shared through a series of speakers and workshops.
