Ms Moore has been Sydney’s Lord Mayor since 2004 but has also served concurrently in state’s parliament as the member for Sydney. A recent change in laws means she can no longer hold the dual roles.

Re-elected recently as the Lord Mayor, Ms Moore is stepping down from her state political role and is encourgaing her supporters to back Mr Greenwich at the forthcoming bi-election.

In a statement Ms Moore said the parliament needs a strong independent voice to stand up for the issues and concerns that are important to the people of Sydney.

‘Alex has proven that he can work with all levels of government and all types of political parties to negotiate policy.’

Greenwich will be replaced by Rodney Croome as National Convener of Australian Marriage Equality. He will continue to support the organisation, this will include addressing the Tasmanian Upper House ahead of their historic vote next week, at the request of the Tasmanian Premier.
