Ollie's World :: Where have all the good guys gone?

OiP’s single guy Ollie Pincott talks about the lows of life on the scene…

On a Saturday night you’d expect a 21 year old single guy to be out drinking, dancing and laughing with friends. That’s what we do right? And that’s usually the case, but tonight I’ve found myself sat at home surfing the net, trying to find an excuse for my unsociable mood and a good reason for being home alone. After wasting a good hour or two on Facebook, I’ve come to the conclusion that singledom sucks. I can’t think of any merits for being single at all. Not one.

I toyed with the idea of going to The Court, to catch up with some friends and survey the scene. However, after going out three nights already this week, I wasn’t really that enthused about getting ready. Instead I made a Milo and put on my comfies. Has it come to this, that I should stay in on the weekend through a lack of talent on the scene?! Maybe so, but an early night in my warm bed seemed far more inviting than going out on the hunt for Mr. Right. I think he should be renamed to ‘Mr. Elusive’ or ‘Mr. I’ve Already Got a Boyfriend’…

I’ve met a few guys since my arrival in Australia, but none of them seem to fit the bill, and I’m beginning to wonder if I am going to find him at all. The first few dates I went on were novel – especially as I’d recently come out of a two and a half year relationship, but they unfortunately didn’t lead any further than ‘good night’ and maybe a bit of a pash!

So what am I doing wrong, and how am I still single?! Not being able to figure it out myself, I decided to investigate by asking friends. While some of them helpfully suggested it was because I’m a tosser (joking of course, but I’ve just saved myself some money on Christmas cards there), it turns out that I’m not alone in my opinion – there seems to be a distinct lack of dateable guys at the moment. We sat drinking and chatted about the different guys that are available (as clearly all the good ones have been taken) and couldn’t fathom out just why we we’re single. Are our standards to high? Could we just be being too fussy? Or are we looking in all the wrong places? By this point the gins had kicked in and we drifted off topic, so I was still no closer to finding out why I’m single.

Determined to find an answer to my plight, I surf Manhunt too see exactly what was on offer out there. Not a great deal, let me tell you! Aside from pervy guys, bitchy queens and very dull profiles, there wasn’t much to see at all. Disappointed and still no closer to finding someone for a hot date, I actually felt like giving up.

Then I remembered something I had heard once, that every pot has a lid. If this was true, maybe I should stop my unsuccessful search for a lid for my pot, and concentrate on something else. After all, men are like busses. You wait for ages and then 3 turn up. So I’ve decided to turn my attentions to something new and different. Getting my profile on chocolate beverage packaging.

Because, when it comes down to it, I’m sure that there are great guys out there just waiting to sweep me off my feet, but as they’re probably at home in bed with a Milo – I want to make sure I’m right there ready to warm them up.
