Uruguay Acknowledges Same-Sex Marriage Overseas

A Spanish and Uruguayan couple has become the first gay couple to have their overbroad marriage recognised in Uruguay, having got married back in 2010.

The ruling made by a Uruguayan judge entitles the married couple to the same rights and responsibilities as their straight married counterparts. The couple’s lawyer Michelle Suárez Bertora told La Prensa -’This ruling turns the jurisprudence that has existed in Uruguay in the last 40 years.

Uruguay leads LGBT Rights in Latin America, it became the first Latin American country to legalise Civil Unions under national legislation in 2007.
