LGBT Surrogacy Legalised in Tasmania

Whilst Queensland is proposing laws that will imprison the queer community for engaging in surrogacy, Tasmania has passed laws that will mean the complete opposite. New laws in Tasmania mean that gay and lesbian couples can use a surrogate in order to have children.
The legislation – which has been awaiting a vote for a year – was welcomed by Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman Rodney Croome, he spoke to the Star Observer, stating –

‘These laws will provide a much-needed framework for recognising and protecting the rights of all parties in a surrogacy arrangement including the child
‘We particularly welcome the fact that the Upper House has treated same-sex couples involved in surrogacy arrangements the same as other couples.’

Tasmania has been at the forefront of pushing equality for the LGBT community, the state is also in the process of legalising same-sex marriage in the state.
‘This sends a strong message to the community about respecting all Tasmanian families equally, and bodes well for a mature and considered debate on the government’s marriage equality bill.’

Today the lower house will vote on proposed laws for marriage equality.
