Surprise Protest at Pride Parade

Equal Love WA staged a surprise protest on the night of the Perth Pride Parade last month, marching the opposite way up William Street moments before the parade was set
to commence.

Chanting for marriage equality, protestor Amber Maxwell explained that protest wasn’t particularly disruptive.

‘I don’t think we’re doing a particularly dramatic march at all, we’re just marching up to where the pride parade is starting and the street is already blocked off’, said Maxwell

Co-President for Pride WA Alice Newport commented that the protest would not cause any detriment to the functioning of future Pride Parades.

‘Pride obviously condones people’s rights to voice their opinions and feelings. It’s unfortunate that the organisation feel the need to try and dampen what is a celebration… the parade is a celebration of the community and we will continue
to celebrate,’ said Newport.
