Artist Zachary Copfer, an American microbiologist and photographer, uses a unique technique that involves the bacteria of his subjects.

According to the website of the UK’s ‘Big Bang Fair’, the ‘bacteriographs’ are made by exposing areas of the petri dish to radiation, causing the bacteria to grow. You can watch the portrait come to life below.
