'We're Waiting' Campaign to Push for Marriage Equality

Rainbow Flag

Fifty Members of Parliament will be sent a rose today as part of a statement to push for marriage equality. The roses mark the beginning of Australian Marriage Equality’s ‘We’re Waiting’ campaign, a nationwide grassroots effort to get same sex marriage passed through parliament.

Only 25 more MPs are needed to support reform for legislation to pass the parliament. All targeted MPs will be sent a rose from a couple who is waiting for same sex marriage to be passed, including gay couples, straight couples who refuse to wed until their non-heterosexual friends can do the same, and parents waiting for their LGBT children to be treated equally by the law.

Deputy National Director for Australian Marriage Equality Ivan Hinton had this to say:
“The We’re Waiting’ campaign is designed specifically to target 50 members of the lower house that we believe we can influence into voting for marriage equality. The campaign is designed to inspire and train members of our community who are supportive of marriage equality to help us persuade those members to support marriage equality when it comes to a vote.”

He suggested that those who want to be involved in the campaign visit the ‘We’re Waiting’ website, where more information on the campaign is available as well as suggestions for how to support marriage equality.
