Rice has been married to Penny Whetton, a transgender woman, for 28 years, a subject she has been vocal about as she campaigned for election.

Whetton transitioned 11 years ago and the couple remained married and live with their two adult sons in Footscray.

“My wonderful partner Penny has been absolutely critical in my life achievements,”, Rice told the parliament yesterday as her family watched from the public gallery.

“We’re proud of our status as a same-sex couple who are legally married in Australia,” she said.

“I am resolute that all couples should be able to share this right. The time for marriage equality in Australia has come.

“I’m here for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people and their families,”

“We deserve recognition and respect in all aspects of our lives. At school, in workplaces, and in communities.

“Penny’s and my partnership shows that love is love, and is to be celebrated.”
