This September 10th is Gynaecological Awareness Day. It’s all about speaking openly about womens’ sexual & reproductive health and supporting women with gynaecological issues.

Gynaecological Awareness Information Network Founder Kath Mazzella explained why this issue is important for the queer comunity:

“We still seem to be brave enough to talk about most issues but gynaecology is still very much in the dark. There’s a lot of history around gynaecology and I think the more we have a look at where we come from and how we can improve on that the better off women will be. But not just us as women but the partners of these women in the gay community. It’s like, well if she doesn’t have a gynaecological problem and doesn’t understand it, how can she support her partner going through these issues? So it’s all about gaining the knowledge, understanding and then being able to share with one another to have a better understanding.”

You can get involved in Gynaecological Awareness Day through Kath’s Undies for Better Understanding campaign, where participants can get creative and design a pair of underwear (as pictured above), which will be displayed to raise awareness and reduce stigma towards gynaecological issues.

There is also an event on September 14th entitled ‘Understand Your Lady Bits Day’ which will be heldat the Rod Evans Centre in East Perth from 1.30pm to 4pm. There will be a number of expert speakers, as well as a performance from Sugar Blue Burlesque, door prizes and afternoon tea.
